Meatpacking Then and Now

In May 2020, nearly 5,000 meatpacking plant workers in 19 states became ill with the coronavirus. At least 20 people died. Virus outbreaks in packing plants are “very difficult to contain,” according to Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds. But what makes these plants so dangerous? I am a sociologist who has studied food system labor issues. I have two answers to that question.
