Britain established its American colonies in the early 1600s, and colonial settlers built new lives for themselves. Colonial charters served as a basis for governing systems that were adapted to meet the special conditions faced by these new societies. During this time of early colonial self-governance, basic ideas of constitutional government were already being implemented to protect rights, represent the people, and balance the powers of government.
