Letters from Birmingham

This Primary Source Set is designed to help students analyze Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” and other primary sources that reveal the political and social climate of the South during the Civil Rights Movement. As students progress through this set they will evaluate the arguments presented for and against civil rights demonstrations. Students will also examine a variety of sources including letters, city ordinances, and photos and critically reflect on what each source reveals about the time period.
