Older Americans, such as James Madison, knew more about war. They really hoped to avoid it. In the end, the pressure from his own party was too much for President Madison. In 1812, he asked Congress to declare war against Great Britain. Congress quickly did. Those who opposed the war called it “Mr. Madison’s War.”
