Ronald Reagan won the presidency and forged a new Republican Party by uniting fiscal and social conservatives. Reagan called for a smaller government by decreasing taxes on individuals and businesses and deregulating industries. His emphasis on smaller government carried into his opposition to welfare and Social Security programs. Reagan also vowed to expand the military and Cold War efforts through increased defense spending. Ronald Reagan took office as a committed Cold Warrior.
